Doubt : ...University man...

Friends,

I came across the following line in 'Sherlock Holmes series':
I'm a London University man

When should 'man' be used in the above sentence? Whether after he has become a man of age 40-45 or even when he is a student?

Eg. Can I introduce myself as : I'm a PSG Tech man?

This expression would be used whatever the age of the person speaking. It simply means he graduated from or is studying at a particular school or University.
