Doubt on strata

1. Every stratum of society.

2. Every strata of society.

Which of the sentence is correct?

Top answer

I was going to say categorically that #1 is correct and #2 is wrong. "Every" requires a singular noun. "stratum" is singular; "strata" is plural.

I studied Latin for three years at school plus a few months at Helsinki University and I certainly would not use the plural with every. However, I'm one of those who also say these data are and the media are, so I'm not sure if my opinion really counts...

Cool BreezeHowever, I'm one of those who also say these data are and the media are,

Good analogy CB. I do actually say "this data is" and (often) "the media is". But this doesn't extend to "this strata is". Perhaps I'm behind the curve.
