Doubt on shades of meaning

Question

Could you tell me if there is any difference in meaning when asking 'Do you speak English?' or 'Can you speak English?' It is known that 'can' may refer to ability so, could it be impolite, in a way, the second option?

There is no practical difference or level of courtesy in any common situation that I can think of, offhand.  Native speakers, however, more usually use 'Do'.

'Do you speak English' can also be used in this less common way.

I know you can speak English, but do you speak English when you are at work?
