Doubt about singular vs. plural case

Hello,

I have some doubts about the usage of were in this sentence, as opposed to was.

"We were waiting for you to share a copy of your client's bank statement with us so we could research this matter further and confirm whether any of the refund attempts were in fact successful."

Can anyone help me understand which is the applicable case, if was or were and the motive why?

Many thanks in advance.

We were waiting for you to share a copy of your client's bank statement with us so we could research this matter further and confirm whether any of the refund attempts was/ were in fact successful. In simple terms, when "any" quantifies over a plural set like this, it takes either plural or singular verbs. So both singular "was" and plural "were" are equally correct in your example.
