Doubt about "Last" use

"She last went on holiday a year ago."

This sentence, don't make sense for me. What the reason of the word "last"?
Why is it after the subject?

Is there other way to say the same thing?

Thanks in advanced.

Hi,

"She last went on holiday a year ago."

You can certainly say it another way, but there's nothing wrong with the sentence as written. 'Last' modifies 'went'. You could just as easily say first/finally etc.

Best wishes, Clive
