can anyone explain to me these doubles:nose to nose ; leg to leg ; mouth to mouth ; head to head ; hand over hand ; eye for eye .Thanks

eye for eye (tooth for tooth) - vendetta, vengeance. if someone hurts you - you have to hurt him.

When taken literally, the preposition 'to' indicates body contact in each of those cases. But "head to head" can also figuratively refer to being in direct competition with someone.

An eye for an eye (and a tooth for a tooth) literally means that if someone plucks out one of your eyes, they deserve to have one of theirs plucked as well. Same with teeth.
