Double space behind periods?

Hi, I'm new to the site and have a simple question.

Today, I was writing a letter for my boss, a doctor, and after about the 6th letter I have dictated for him, he pointed out that the new sentence should be double spaced behind the period. I had never heard this before today. Is this standard?

An example:

Today is Tuesday. The weather is cold. (one space)

Today is Tuesday. The weather is cold. (two space)

I am more curious than anything, if that's how he wants it, that's how he'll get it. Emotion: wink I'm just dumbfounded that I had never heard this before.

Thanks,

WW

It used to be the standard, back in the day of fixed-space fonts. It's considered old-fashioned now. It's not wrong -- it's just a style.

  • If you use it, just use it consistently, but you can tell him that most style guides, including the AP Stylebook, no longer do this.
