Double or single quotation marks?

I have read some article and come to know, that in US English, we use only double quotation mark not single quotation mark while in British we use both. Kindly correct me if I am wrong.

In a same article, I read. There were two sentences writing differently. I ant to know which on we should use. And what is the correct way to use single and double quotation.

1) - He said to her: "I thought 'Titanic' was a good film."

2) - He said to her: 'I thought "Titanic" was a good film.'

In the US, a quotation within a quotation uses single quote marks. However, use a comma before a direct quote, not a colon. Usually the name of a movie or book is italicized, but you can use quote marks if you can't change font.
