Double Negative

what kind of effect does a double negative have on a sentence?

Top answer

It depends. It's commonly used to say something negative isn't true, so negative + negative = positive. I didn't say she isn't pretty.

Non-existant? It's not non-existant. It does exist!

When negative + negative = negative, it's considered dialectal.

A true double negative reverses the meaning. The problem is when the speaker doesn't intend to reverse the meaning, and in that case it's considered wrong and to be avoided.
