double meaning of a word

Hello,

It is difficult for me to understand the following sentence. Would you take a look at it?

The archaeological record authenticates the appearance of extraterrestrials.

According to dirctionaries, the word "appearance" has several meanings and in the above sentence, I think "a look" and "an arrival" are both possible. Am I right? Otherwise, is there a way to distinguish them in a sentence?

Many thanks in advance

Of course: context, general knowledge and common sense. That is how we distinguish the meanings all of our polysemous words.
