Double down

Hi,

I know that we can 'double down on something', but I was wondering if 'double down on doing something' is also possible.

"He doubled down on sprucing up the garden to get everything done before his wife's arrival from the spa."

Thank you.

Well, it is grammatical, but not the usual context. What is the risky situation? Is his wife threatening to put him in the dog house?
