do/try your best

Hello,
Do both of them work for you in:
- He will do/try his best to get what he wants. - I prefer "do".
- He's a good player, but I will try/do my best to defeat him. - I'd go with "do".

How far wrong could I go with "do"? I think it sounds fine.
