Vocabulary

Door, gate, entrance.

Hi,
Please help!
Door is for the house, and gate is for the courtyard, but entrance is for what?
A cinema, a supermarket, or a building?
Can you list some?
What are the features of the structure that can be called an entrance?
Does entrance must have an opposite structure called exit?

Thank you very much!!

An entrance is the area of a building where people come in. It does not refer to something like a gate or door that can be open or shut, but coming into the building. Large stores frequently have "Entrance" and "Exit" marked on doors.

  • This can be for several reasons - for security (there is a scanner for people entering or exiting), to improve foot traffic flow, or to have a location for shopping carts or check-in counters (eg.
