Don't/doesn't in sentence

How come your family doesn't/don't get involved?

Family is considered plural right?

They don't get involved. They is plural why isn't it doesn't?

In the United States, "family" is singular when considered as a unit: Why doesn't your family get involved in this fight? It is plural when you think of the members as individuals: My family are planning their (separate) vacation plans for next year.
