Don't understand why it's not past tense

Hi there. I was practising my grammar today, and I came across a question that I struggle to understand.

1) We watched the L.A Lakers play the championship game.

2) Afterwards, I sat beside my parents and watched the other contestants perform.

In both cases, I don't understand the usage of present tense if the event takes place in the past. Pls explain, as I am very confused.
