Don't put words into my mouth

I told him "Don't put words into my mouth." after he told me "You're literally telling me by doing this that you don't trust me."

I am not sure you can use the expression "Don't put words into my mouth." when the words are alleged and interpreted from a non-verbal act. What do you think?
