Don't know who that was?

Hi! everyone.

Me and my friend are on a bike, moving very fast and a stranger passes by us and my friend asks me "Do you know who that was?"

Or Should he have said "Did you know who that was"?

If the later is correct? why is it so?

I think he used past tense(that was) because we had left him behind.

Which one of the above questions is grammatical or idiomatic?

What would you have said if you were in my friend's place?
