Hi teachers~
I would like to know the difference between '(1)Don't expect too much.' and '(2)Don't get your hopes up.'
It would be best if I could give you a context but actually I don't have any.
I was watching an English tutorial and the tutor said (2) is a better choice when
A is looking forward to a TV show because her favorite singer might be on. B said "Don't get your hopes up. She might not be on the show."
Then what's wrong with "Don't expect too much?"
Thanks in advance~
" The singer being on the show or not being on the show is a fairly binary choice (either one thing or the other, not a gradation of possibilities). "Don't expect too much" does not seem binary enough for the context.
