Don't, can't, isn't

I wanted to know if I should always avoid contractions in formal texts or if there are acceptable contractions.

Because sometimes it looks and sounds very odd not to use them...

For instance:

I do not know it...

I cannot do it...

It does not mean that...

It is not so...
