I too am looking for the origins of the bcd 'donnies' which is used only for a childs hands... some folk think it came from a french word donnez, which means just to give? Yes we do have a lot of words which are influenced by many languages but i'm not too happy in accepting that origin... so any further help on this topic would be great

Im not convinced its from donnez as apparently norman french dont use it and why is it only west midlands? Theres donnybrook which is slang for a brawl fisticuffs, maybe a hand connection?
