Doing quiz on subjects and verbs

I failed on part of a quiz where we're suppose to find subject and verb of a sentence. We under the subject once and the verb twice. This is the question I got wrong.

Each of the girls sings well.

I put girls for the subject and sings for the verb, and was told I was that each was the subject and sings was the verb. If the subject of a sentence is suppose to be the person or thing performing the verb, why would the subject be each and not girls?

You are confusing grammar with real life. 'Girls' is the object of the preposition
