Doing one's or his best?

Hi. Which is correct? Please see the underlined part. Thank you for your help in advance.

(A son talking to his father)

Son: Dad, I never finish first place in anything. I'm sad.
Dad: Don't be. What's important in life is having the mindset of doing (1) one's best / (2) his best.

You can't use the pronoun his without some noun to refer to, which is called the pronoun antecedent.
