Doing good is part of our code (pun intended)

Hi

The Mozilla Firefox homepage says, "Doing good is part of our code (pun intended)".

What's the reason for explicitly mentioning that a pun is intended? Won't it be more effective if it's left to the reader to choose between the two totally different meanings? I understand that in some cases inclusion of the phrase, "pun intended", is a good idea just like adding a smiley face to some sentences in order to make the tone humorous or less offensive. Please let me know your opinion. Thanks.

Perhaps, as you suggest, it is to add an overtly humorous tone. Perhaps it is to draw attention to a pun that might otherwise be overlooked by the reader. Clive

And, even with the signal, I don't get the pun. I guess it's just too early in the year for me.
