dog shut

He tried to drive away the dog but it wouldn't go. When it went on for sometime. Eklavya lost his temper and shot seven arrows at tthe dog. The arrows expertly stitched the mouth of the dog shut without seriously wounding it.

What does "shut" mean in this sentence?
