Doesn't this mean the same thing?

Doesn't fakes mean the same thing as false throws?

"The dog watches the ball as intently as he can through all the fakes and changes of direction and false throws that his master makes."

So does "false throw" mean you make a mistake while throwing the ball and the ball went in a different direction than intended?
