Doesn't make sense

Is this sentence gramatically correct? "He was recovering in hospital yesterday but can't wait to get home and say "thank you", Buddy".
I can't understand how past continuous combines with present simple.
Can there be a misprint (instead of "can't" - couldn't)?
If it is ok, please explain the meaning in detail .

He was recovering in hospital yesterday , but can't wait to get home and say "thank you", Buddy . The tenses are a little muddled. It would be better to say that he was recovering and couldn't wait to get home, or that he is recovering and can't wait to get home.
