Does "to be apologetic about Darwin" mean "to be sorry for Darwin"?

Context:

The next chapters look more closely at those aspects of science devoted to the study of life. The potential conflicts be-
tween science and faith, at least as perceived by many modern commentators, will continue to appear. But I will argue
that if we wisely apply Saint Augustine's advice, crafted well over a thousand years before there was any reason to be
apologetic about Darwin, we will be able to find a consistent and profoundly satisfying harmony between these world-
views.

That is a rather rare use of "apology" to mean a systematic defense of a doctrine or the like. It is seen mostly in religious contexts. Augustine wrote many apologies.

I don't know. This seems to be a creationist writing, and I can't make sense of those guys.
