Does this sound right?

Ron Harper felt that playing for the Clippers was like serving time. Why was he put into this terrible position?

Perhaps, "Why was he placed in this terrible position?" would be smoother, but yours may be more casual, and more suggestive of incarceration.

You might want to consider "situation" as a replacement for "position," unless he's speaking of the position he plays on the floor.

But, as I say, yours is fine.
