Does this sentence sound natural?

I grew up in Newcastle which is northeast of England, it's a very industrial area.

As far as I know, Newcastle is located inside England, so I think this sentence isn't correct and it should be "I grew up in Newcastle which is located northeast in England, it's very industrial area".
