In more recent times, Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring set forth pragmatic thinking throughout the 1960s as it parsed the problem that certain synthetic pesticides used in agriculture such as DDT were causing ecological degradation.

I think that the 1960s could qualify as "more recent times" if that era is being contrasted with events of much longer ago. Even so, I don't think this is the most elegant sentence ever written
