Does this sentence make sense?

I'm writing a newspaper report for school on Alexander III of Scotland's death and was wondering if this sounded good as a sentence starter?

"Late yesterday night, as evening began to dawn, the lords and kings had sat round the grand table discussing plans for their countries whilst eating dinner and drinking wine."
