Does this sentence make sense?

Does adding "Or 2 points" make the sentence grammatically incorrect? It seems so. How would I have to write it please?

1 I'm wondering if the team knew they were down by 3 points or 2 points.

It sounds clumsy. The person who is wondering is also unsure of the outcome. He is wondering what someone is wondering about something that he should be wondering about.
