It makes perfect sense to me.
There are two uses of "varies from X to Y." This is the other one.
The more common one establishes a range:
The temperature varies from -20 degrees F. to +120 degrees F. (It meanders within that range.)

This doesn't sound good to me.
The intention seems to be to suggest that these are two extremes, two opposite ends of a spectrum of types of writing. But I don't see that they are. They are just two examples.
In addition, the repetition of the word 'writing' is not good style.
