Does this need to be capitalized?

Hi,

I am trying to use military terms in a story, and was wondering if they should be capitalized? Specifically, I want to use:

ex-staff seargent, ex-marine, and ex-liuetenant

Do I write them as: Ex-Staff Seargent, Ex-Marine, Ex-Liutenant?

What if I am referring to the Staff Seargent without the "ex." Are the titles capitalized too?

Thank you!!

Don't capitalize titles if they stand alone; but capitalize them when the title precedes a name. However, if the name and the title is separated by commas, do not capitalize the title. Don't capitalize ex- when used with titles.

  • That is, as long as Captain Scott Mayer and ex-Captain Richard Jones show up.
