It's certainly unlear what the word "anyhow" is doing there, but in the right context, it's possible. Perhaps they were told not have a snack before yoking the oxen, but they did anway. )

They had a quick snack?

They ate their snack quickly?

They ate their snack in a messy manner?

What does it have to do with the oxen?
