Does this make sense grammatically and overall?

This is the opening line to my introduction:

There is nothing more universal to the human condition -- nor contentious -- than religion.

Does it make sense to you? Is the grammar correct or should it be punctuated differently with a semicolon or comma followed by emdash etc.?
