I don't understand the 'so as'.

I see it as perhaps a bit more formal (or stylized), but it is perfectly correct.

As constrcuted, the sentence sounds off to my ear with " as so ". Perhaps the preson meant " so that ".

Funnily enough, for me the insertion of "so as" makes that sentence less formal and more chatty.
