Does this make sense?

If I were to say that having good English skills is very important and that it will be helpful for the rest of your life, is it correct to say "having good English skills can go a long way" ?

There's nothing really wrong with it, but we'd usually say "a long way toward making you successful," or something like that.
Alternately, ". . . . [they/it] can take you a long way." ("Toward X" not necessary.)
