Does this make sense

I'm writing a novel one of my lines is:
"What's wrong?" his nuturing voice surfaced after she failed to stop her crying.
Does this make sense, especially the "his nurturing voice surfaced"?

It kind of makes sense, but I can't tell if you've used the rather unusual words "nurturing" and "surfaced" deliberately and with knowledge of their effect, or accidentally when in fact wanting words that would be more standard in this context.
