Does this expression make sense?

Is it possible to say, "What number did you want?" instead of saying, "what number did you dial? You have the wrong number."

Top answer

It's possible, but not very logical. When a person calls, they want to speak with a person, not a number. A: I want to speak with Doctor Who.

A: 123-45678. I know it'S late, but it's an emergency.
B: I think you have the wrong number.

Your conversation is messed up. B calls A, which is the wrong party.
