Does 'They decided to start swimming in the ocean, in contradiction'..

Does it sound natural? Do you have any other word to describe 'in contradication to what the life guard said'...
Can I say as opposed?
In defiance?

I will try. I might be wrong, though so don't take me up on that^^ In this situation i would prefer regardless. Or better I would transfer whole sentence using 'despite' 'in spite of' etc.
