Does there need to be a hyphen in Pig Farmer Journal?

In the title "Pig Farmer Journal" does pig and farmer need to be hyphenated together, and could you explain why? Thanks.

No hyphen. Hyphens are used to give a new meaning. pig-headed (stubborn) narrow-minded (opinionated) big-hearted (generous) wide-ranging (extensive) ne'er-do-well (good-for-nothing, ***) Sometimes, with usage over time, the hypen disappears, and a compound word results.

  • Examples I can think of are middle-class (middleclass) and fire-house (firehouse).
  • They used to be 2 words, then hyphenated, and now compound, although you still see the older forms.

Hi AlpheccaStars. I was thinking of phrases like "next-door neighbour", aren't you supposed to use a hyphen there since next and door are treated as one unit? So I was wondering if pig and farmer need a hyphen too.

There is no hyphen in pig farmer. It is a person who raises pigs for a living.

Many nouns used to modify other nouns, and there is no hyphen joining them.

e.g.

stone wall (wall made of stone)

iron curtain (metaphor coined by Churchill for Russia and the Eastern Bloc in the 1950's)

card table (table for playing cards)
