Does "sanitarium" also mean "mental home"?

I have come across this meaning ("mental hospital") of "sanitarium" in an online dictionary, but all other dictionaries I've checked so far don't seem to have it.

So is it OK to use the word "sanitarium" in this meaning ("mental institution")?
