Does "prefer to ...rather than...." contain negative indication?

Hello. I have a question about usage of "prefer to.... rather than...".

In the sentence 'Young customers prefer to buy their clothes on the internet nowaydays rather than shopping in the nearby store or department store face to face.'

Does the sentence above imply customers think nearby store or department store is not good or disapprove of those stores?
In addition, is it still grammatical if I omit "rather" in the sentence('Young customers....face to face)?

Thank you in advance.
