Does my sentence make sense?

Sir Elphinstone, I am so very sorry! I had been attending to the needs of another student when suddenly I heard an audible screech that seemed to come from this quadrant. At first, I thought it to be a bird, but then I heard a second screech and another. At that moment, I thought it wise to return to your study – and so I did, but to find myself in this – scrabble – I am as bewildered as you are, sir.

Does this make sense ? How can I improve it? Thanks teachers.
