Does my sentence make sense?

The memories of his childhood flooded him like a tidal wave.

Top answer

Yes, if that's what you wish to say. Some things flood slowly and gradually. Others flood quickly and violently - like a tidal wave.

It makes sense, but it seems a little overdone ("flood" + "tidal wave"). Perhaps something more like: overpowered him like a tidal wave, rushed over him like a tidal wave. It's all a question of style.

Apart from the question whether the combination between flooded and tidal wave is good style or not, shouldn't the preposition 'back' be used here? Just wondering...

Do you mean, "... flooded back him ..."? No, but you could do "... flooded back to him ...". I wouldn't say "... flooded him back ..." either, if that's what you were going for.
