Abstract

The thesis discusses that culture-specific items in literary translations as the one of the most challenging tasks to be performed by a translator. For this research, the corpus that has been chosen is J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, that as a masterpiece in fantasy literature, provides a large number of culture-specific items. The specifics of the literary translation are briefly discussed, focusing on Lawrence Venuti and Eugene Nida, who appear to be standing at too opposing poles regarding the equivalence theory. For treatment of CSI in the corpus, Franco Aixelà’s model of translation strategies and Peter Newmark’s model of translation procedures are employed; and it is identified which of these procedures and strategies are more effective than the others. In the analytical part of this thesis, The Silmarillion comes into focus, as we examine the problems raised by the translation of Tolkien’s neologisms and his unique style. The corpus provides numerous examples of names for analyzing the treatment of Tolkien’s complex nomenclature. It analyzes what kinds of effects the names bring to the source readers and how these effects are reproduced to the Macedonian readers through translation. Compound words, that are characteristic of Tolkien’s settings, are also analyzed. The main challenge in translating Tolkien's The Silmarillion lies in the author's use of archaisms as a deliberate and fully integrated style element. This thesis has shown that translating fantasy literature should be justifiably perceived as a non-marginal and serious endeavor.
