Does it sound natural

Hi!
Does this sentence sound natural?
He went through a lot of challenges to become what he is now.

Can I say
He defended his candidate thesis and PhD thesis.
I know "candidate" does not exist in Western countries. It's the first stage towards PhD thesis, but not a master, one step higher.

Thank you!

Thank you.
Yeah, I knew it. It's important for me that native speakers understand these levels. What about

She defended her PhD thesis as well as obtained a doctorate in physics. Does it make sense to you?
The thing is that you guys have just PhD (and postdoc, which is a position, not a title), but we have a candidate (which is like your PhD) plus doctorate.

Do you call a person with doctorate of Sciences a Professor or a Doctor? Or is it the same?

Sorry, I didn't see the previous comment.

I mean to say that in some countries "candidate" means something between a master and a PhD, not merely someone in pursuit for a seat in office. That's the difference.
