Does "hundreds of thousands" mean"100X1,000=100,000s" ?

Would you please show me what the underlined means?
I had thought it means " hundreds of ,thousands (of ) or millions of other people" but someone explanin "hundreds of thousands means (100X1,000=100,000s)" and "millions means (1,000,000) " , right?
I can't see this part well that "hundreds of thousands means (100X1,000=100,000s)" .
Would you mind if I ask about it ?
I hope you show me another easy example like that for me.

eg In Antarctica, there are hundreds of thousands of penguins. maybe 200,000, maybe 300,000 maybe 400,000, etc. But such expressions are usually just approximations, and indeed often just mean 'a lot'.

The confusing part about the explanation is that you're using numbers to describe the quantity of other numbers. And since their is a huge gap between 1,000 and 1,000,000 we describe estimates in between those numbers such as 10,000 , 50,000 , ect... In this circumstance we know that there ar
