Does "deferred judgement" mean "decided to make a judgement later"?

1) Does "deferred judgement" mean "decided to make a judgement later"?
2) Does "one strand" mean "a part"? (That is, some in theologian circle).
Is the use "one strand" common. In my view. the collocation "one strand... intertwine..." sounds good and neat.

Context:

Many theologians deferred judgement, but the proponents of at least one strand in theology in nineteenth-century England chose to intertwine their insights closely with those of Darwin.
